Abstract/Description: | Morphological characterization is more important in identification of a variety and new sources of variability.A total of 2,458 seedlings which were obtained after in vitro regeneration of two popular varieties of sugarcane, 2003V46 and Co86032 using four chemical mutagens (EMS,Sodium nitrate, sodium azide and 2, 4 D) were evaluated in field for any morphological variation by comparing with parental genotypes. After field evaluation of all seedlings, the clump characters were recorded on only those somaclones which showed morphological variation.Out of 2,458 seedlings,35 showed morphological variationand these somaclones were characterized using 27 DUS descriptorsas per PPV& FRA, 2005and frequency of somaclones for various characters was analysed. Variations were observed for 20 characters out of 27 studied. These 35 somaclones serve as reservoirs for different traits and can be exploited in breeding programmes for production of promising sugarcane varieties introgressing useful traits. |
