Abstract/Description: | Soil biodiversity is essential for recycling of plant nutrients, scavenging CO2 from air, modification of soil physical structure and maintaining water regimes, waste recycling, humification, decontamination, and bioremediation and biological control of pest and pathogens. Utilization of soil biodiversity is necessary for optimization of the abovementioned ecosystem services and increasing use efficiency of natural as well as applied resources to meet the increasing demand. Soil biodiversity enhances use efficiency of applied nutrients by P solubilization/mobilization/mineralization, atmospheric N fixation, K solubilization/mobilization, siderophore production for Fe uptake, sulfur oxidation, and decomposition of organic matter to release trapped nutrients for plant uptake. Microbial consortia are very much useful in degrading various species of xenobiotics. Waste recycling by soil biodiversity has the largest economic benefit in terms of monetary value. This paper reviews the exploitation of soil biodiversity in respect to its utilization for enhancing nutrient use efficiency, and improving and maintaining the physical and chemical environment of soil, which all together can provide economic and environmental benefit towards maintaining agricultural sustainability. Major emphasis has been given on documenting and exploitation of soil biodiversity in recent times from diverse ecosystem of Indian soils. |
