Abstract/Description: | Soils of perhumid sub-tropical North Eastern India are in general acidic in nature. In the present investigation, an attempt was made to assess the effect of different landscape positions on various forms of soil acidity, if any, under similar agro-climatic condition. Further, effect of exchangeable aluminium and different pools of iron (Fe) in soil on various forms of soil acidity was also assessed. Soil samples were collected across a catenary sequence from Meghalaya in North Eastern India. Soil samples were collected from four different depth namely, 0-15, 15-30, 30-45 and 45-60 cm. Results indicated that on an average, soil reaction was medium acidic (pH 5.5 to 6.0) in plateau top, side slope and valley, whereas soil was strongly acidic (pH 5.0 to 5.5) in foot slope. Exchange acidity and total potential acidity of soil in various landscape positions followed the order of foot slope > side slope> plateau top > valley. Almost similar trend was obtained in case of hydrolytic acidity. Considerable amount of exchangeable aluminium (Ex-Al) was determined in all the landscape positions (up to 2.70 cmol (p+) kg-1 in foot slope), except valley (0.35 cmol (p+) kg-1). Results further indicated that at comparable soil pH in plateau top (5.57) and side slope (5.55), significant difference in Ex-Al was observed in the soils occurring on these landscape positions. Significantly lower Ex-Al content in plateau top soil (0.67 cmol p+ kg-1) as compared to side slope (1.73 cmol p+ kg-1) may be attributed to the soil type and associated clay mineralogy of soil on these landscape positions. Correlation and regression analysis indicated that exchange acidity could be predicted based on exchangeable aluminium, whereas total potential acidity and hydrolytic acidity could be predicted well based on soil reaction and organically bound iron (Fe). The study indicates that in perhumid sub-tropics the organic carbon plays an important role in governing acidity, particularly total potential and hydrolytic acidity in soil. Therefore, regular monitoring and sequestration of soil organic carbon has long-term implication on the nature of soil acidity in the North Eastern India. |
