Abstract/Description: | Soil quality cannot be measured directly but are generally inferred from the changes in its attributes referred to as soil quality indicators. Depending upon the quantified values of these parameters and the threshold limits, the quality of soil can be assessed as good or not good. To develop an easy method of understanding soil quality and to apply it for soil systems, the present study was taken with the representative black soils from Vidarbha, Maharashtra. The morphological, physical, and chemical parameters were determined. To develop a model for assessing soil quality, eleven (11) soil parameters were selected as soil quality indicators. These are bulk density (BD), hydraulic conductivity (HC), coefficient of linear extensibility (COLE), water retention, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic carbon (OC), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and exchangeable Mg, Na, Ca/Mg ratio, Ca/Na ratio, Mg/Na ratio. On the basis of available literatures, relative influence of the physical and chemical characteristic on crop yield as well as correlation between the above parameters, five (5) soil quality parameters were selected. The threshold limits for these soil quality parameters were also ascertained. These parameters are bulk density (< 1.4 Mgm-3: good), saturated hydraulic conductivity (> 2.0 cmhr-1: good), pH (< 8.5: good), organic carbon (≥1.0 %: good), and calcium carbonate (< 5 %: good). On the basis of threshold values of the selected soil quality parameters a software named “BlackSQ” was developed for assessing the quality of soils in black soil region. The user interface of BlackSQ permits the users to enter input data of the selected physical and chemical parameters of soils and to run the model. The model works well for the soils of the Vidarbha region and was tested with the soil data from the published literature. |
