dc.description.abstract | In rural India, wood is the principal source of fuel (66.6%) followed by oil product (16.9%) animal dung (8.3%) coal 2.3% and others (3.4%). About 70% of this wood collected from the forest villages of plantations and other nearby sites. An important consequence of inadequate supply of fuel wood is the burring of agriculture residues and animal dung which other wise would have been used for restoring side fertility and increasing food production. The rapid depletion of forest wood and the loss of forest cover has led to serious problem of erosion, floods and desertification. A survey carried out by the Agricultural Engineering Department, PAU, Ludhiana in a village community in 1979 showed that on the average. 3.5x106 kcals are used as kitchen fuel per person per year. This is more than the total energy utilized to produce a good crop of wheat on one hectare of land. | en_US |
