Abstract/Description: | In India, annual oilseed crops are grown in an area of about 26 million ha with the production of about 30 million tons annually. Despite being the largest cultivator of oilseed crops in the world, India imports about 50% of its requirements to meet the domestic edible oil demand. This situation underscores the need for dedicated efforts to improve oilseed production in the country to achieve self-reliance in the edible oil sector. A major challenge is that most of the oilseed crop cultivation occurs in highly unpredictable, resource poor, rainfed situations, which seriously impact the crop productivity. Therefore, development of improved technologies through R&D efforts is critical for improving the productivity and boosting the production. ICAR-IIOR, Hyderabad along with its partners of All India Coordinated Research Programmes (AICRP) at State Agricultural Universities are committed to this endeavor with the mission to realize higher production and profitability of oilseed cultivation in the country. Since the inception of All India Coordinated Research Project on Oilseeds (AICORPO) in 1967, new technologies are evolved from time to time to address the production constraints at various agro-ecological regions where the oilseed crops are grown. Since 2000, ICAR-IIOR has been mainly involved in development of technologies - improved cultivars (varieties/hybrids), agronomy and insect-pest and disease management - in the mandate crops namely castor, sunflower and safflower through AICRP. In order to provide all the necessary technological information in a comprehensive manner, ‘Handbook on ICAR-IIOR Technologies (2009-2019)’ is published, which cover the important crop technologies pertaining to released cultivars, crop production and crop protection available in the mandate crops. The technologies developed and recommended in the AICRP system in castor, sunflower and safflower during the last 10 years (2009-2019) have been included in this publication. It is hoped that this handbook would serve as a ready reckoner for the researchers and farmers to refer and use. |
