Abstract/Description: | The huge importance of fresh water in sustaining the human life is beyond any doubt. Nonetheless, both anthropogenic and climatic factors have drastically reduced the fresh water supplies in the last few decades. While productive water resources are rapidly depleting, the problem of marginal quality water has considerably increased and is likely to worsen due to climate change impacts. Burgeoning global population, changing diets and ever increasing demands from the industrial, urban and environmental sectors mean that far lesser water will be allocated to agriculture in future. In this paper, the current global trends in managing poor quality water in agricultural production are discussed. The implications of water scarcity for global food and environmental security are critically examined. The research and development needs to sustain the global food demands with low quality water vis-à-vis environmental sustainability are discussed. |
