dc.description.abstract | The present study was taken up on comparative transcriptome analysis of sugarcane and C. falcatum gene families which determine virulence and lifestyle transition genes with previously reported genome and transcriptome of C. falcatum. Our results suggest that gene families attributable to virulence and other active enzymes are similar with other hemibiotrophic pathogens. In contrast, the study has identified 8,540 genes which may play a pivotal role during sugarcane and C. falcatum interaction. A comparision of in vitro sequenced and sugarcane x C. falcatum interaction transcripts revealed much about the gene families, especially that from the 12,270 genes found in the genome only 8,540 were found to be induced during the pathogen challenge and successful invasion in the host system. A large number of genes present in C. falcatum encoding biotrophy-necrotrophy transition were identified at in planta level. Further, their temporal and spatial expression will be validated through qRT-PCR. The transcriptome based gene annotation gave a clear view that C. falcatum is unique than its closely related species like C. graminicola and C. sublineola (the causal organisms of anthracnose in maize and sorghum, respectively) in gene set families and clusters of enriched groups. In conclusion, the findings from this study provide a better understanding of the biology of red rot pathogen and identification of several unique putative genes/functions required for its pathogenesis in sugarcane. Also, this attempt to sequence sugarcane x C. falcatum interaction in NGS platform gave a lead in finding the distinctive gene model to be characterized further | en_US |
