Abstract/Description: | In a 13-year old long-term field experiment, involving a fixed rotation of finger millet-maize-fodder cowpea and use of fertilisers and farmyard manure on a Kandic Paleustalf soil an attempt was made to examine the changes in the status of organic and inorganic pools of soil S, total N, organic carbon and S mineralisation. The results indicated that NPK ( + S) applied for 13 years at 50%, 100% and 150% of optimum recommended rates and 100% NPK ( + S) with farmyard manure (FYM) increased the organic C and total N status of soil as compared to control and their initial status. Intensive cropping with continuous use of 100% NPK without S resulted in depletion of total, organic and inorganic S concentrations by 10.7, 10.3 and 19.4%, respectively over control while in plots that received graded rates of S with NPK and NPK plus FYM their status got improved. Phosphate extractable inorganic S was found to be a better index of soil S mineralisation than organic and inorganic S fractions extracted by NaHCO 3 and NaOH. Cumulative amounts of S mineralised during 14 week incubation period in various treatments varied between 5.6 and 31.5 mg S kg-1 soil and increased with increase in the rates of S applied along with NPK fertilisers. Incorporation of FYM with 100% NPK ( + S) resulted in greater cumulative mineralised S over 100% NPK ( + S) alone. The cumulative mineralised S showed a quadratic relationship with the duration of incubation in all the treatments. |
