Abstract/Description: | The -callusing and regenemtion potential of intergeneric and interspecific hybrids of saccharum was assessed. rhe hybiios used for the #;, ; * i.' oyp"iniu * * a|iontnur, s. fficinarum_x s. spontaneum, s. fficinarum x screroitachya und "o * * * r"ial sugarca:re Yuli"tv x s' fficinarum. Cytological analysis has been ionjucteo and confirmed the hybridity ofthese clones. Data on "ultore effipiency and regeneration efficiency reveaied that callusing and regeneration"poturriar of these hybrids.r.;r;, d;;;nding on genotype, The culture efficier:cy of S. officinarum x sclerasiachya was-less 1+0.2.; wtren compared to other hybrids (80-100%). Production of non ernbryogenic calli was more in this hybrid. A differential influence of parental genome on ""ll proliferation and morphogenesis was observed' In order to increase callus regeneration, the embryogenic calli were subjected to partial desiccatiott' calli desiccated for-five lrours showea iai, weight loss and those calli showed enhancerl plattt generation response invariably ;n * rr nyurias over other desiccation treatments anrl c0ntrol- The desiccation treatment siowed improvement in conversion of sotnatic embryos inkl lrealthy plants as compared to plants obtainea frorn the non-desiccated ernbryogenic calli. The methocl described is simple, ine * p"nrir" and does not require advanced technical workers or equipurent. sincc it is"applicabie to all the hybrids studied, the method can be useful to increasc the rate of in vitio ,"grr.r * ti;n especially in in viya recalcitrant materials.
