dc.description.abstract | A study was conducted to understand the effect of seven tobacco types on the growth and development of S. exigua through construction of laboratory life tables of the insect. Among the seven tobacco types on which the life table of S. exigua were constructed, the insect could complete its life cycle only on flue-cured Virginia ( FCV) and burley types of tobacco. On other types the insect could not reach pupal stage. Between FCV and burley types, FCV supported better growth and development than burley. Mean generation time (Tc) was longer on burley (33.19 days) compared to FCV tobacco ( 30.3 days). Net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (rc) and doubling time were 3.11, 2.33 and 2.22 times higher, respectively on FCV tobacco compared to burley. A combination of leaf surface chemicals and secondary metabolites of the cell sap could be governing the suitability or otherwise of a particular tobacco type as host to S. exigua. | en_US |
