Abstract/Description: | Dichanthium annulatum (Forssk.) Stapf. is one of the important perennial range grass species, commonly known as Marvel grass and covers a considerable area of grassland in tropical and subtropical India. Three hundred accessions of D. annulatum were screened at ICAR-IGFRI, Jhansi for higher biomass using six quantitative morphological characters viz., number of tillers, leaf length, leaf width, leaf sheath length, leaf sheath width and fresh biomass. The coefficient of variance (CV) was highest for fresh biomass (30.9 %), followed by leaf length (27.2 %), number of tillers (25.3 %), leaf sheath length (21.9 %), leaf sheath width (19.9 %) and leaf width (19.8%). Biomass had shown wide range of variation from 2.08 t/ha to 39.5 t/ha with the mean of 19.4 t/ha. The genotype IG 02-211 was recorded with the highest biomass (39.5 t/ha). Based on the quantitative morphological traits data, the accessions, namely, IG 02-567 showed maximum mean value for leaf length (29.33 cm), leaf sheath width (6.17 mm) and leaf sheath length (7.17 cm), Whereas, the highest mean leaf width (7.00 mm) recorded in the genotype IG 02-223. The major trait, fresh biomass showed highly significant positive correlation with number of tillers (0.363), leaf length (0.302), and leaf sheath length (0.263) at 0.1 % and 1.0 % level of probability except leaf width (0.050) and leaf sheath width (0.023). The Euclidean distance based UPGMA method of cluster analysis grouped the 300 accessions into five clusters. The maximum inter-distance cluster value (1584.17) was between Cluster 4 and Cluster 1. The maximum intra-distance cluster value (1393.06) was within Cluster 1. |
