Abstract/Description: | This study was conducted to find the consumption pattern of trout fish which is mostly produced and consumed in the Kashmir Valley of India. To understand the consumers’ behaviour and constraints faced by them the study was conducted during 2014-15 by collecting data through personal interview of trout consumers. It was found that only 8.24 per cent of the total household expenditure was spent for the purchase of fish. Trout was the most preferred fish and 33.33 per cent of the consumers bought trout once a month, 28.33 per cent once a week, 16.67per cent occasionally, 13.33 per cent twice a month, and 5.0 per cent twice a week. The majority of consumers (91.67%) preferred trout due to its taste, 78.33 per cent for its freshness, 58.33 per cent due to the presence of less bone, and 53.33 per cent for health reasons. The majority of consumers (65%) were willing to pay even a higher than the prevailing market price (` 300-450/kg) if trouts are made available in the nearest local market. The consumers reported that prevailing price of trout and long distance to fetch fish to be the major constraints. Encouraging trout production in the state will increase its availability in local markets which will lead to better nutrition and food security of people and will also create employment and income generating opportunity for the poor people of the state. |
