Abstract/Description: | WORLDWI DE, 1 1 . 5% rai nfed. These regions cover about 40% of the wor l d’ s l and area and h o s t n e a r l y 4 0 % o f t h e wo r l d ’ s popul ation. Further, about 70% of the world’s staple food continues and will continue to be harvested from r ai nf ed area s , s i nce t he s cope f or f ur t her expans i on of i r r i ga t i on i s limited due to growing competition for water and the hi gh i nvestment cost. The rainfed agriculture may play a major role in India’s food security and sustainable economic growth as 55% of net sown area of India comes under rainfed lands spread over 218 di s t r i c t s i n t he s t a t e s of Pu nj a b, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Ma d h y a Pr a d e s h, Chh a t t i s g a r h , Guj a r a t , Ma h a r a s h t r a , An d hr a Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Rainfed crops account for 48% area under food crops and 68% of the area under non-food crops. Rainfed areas suffer from various b i op h y s i c a l a n d s o c i o - e c o n omi c constraints affecting the productivity of crops and livestock. In this context a numbe r of e c onomi c a l l y vi a bl e rainfed technologies have been discussed. |
