| Abstract/Description: | ON THE BASIS OF DATA, THE PAPER SUGGESTS THAT BENCH TERRACES IN THE NILGIRIS REGION SHOULD BE PROVIDED WITH LONGITUDINAL GRADIENT OF 0.84 OR SLIGHTLY GREATER. HIGHER LONGITUDINAL GRADES CAN BE PROVIDED TO ENSURE BETTER DRAINAGE WITHOUT DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS, PARTICULARLY WHEN THE SOIL LOSSES WERE OBSERVED TO BE FAR BELOW THE PERMISSIBLE SOIL LOSS. EVEN AT 0.84% LONGITUDINAL GRADE , THE SOIL LOSS WAS NEGLIGIBLE. |
