Abstract/Description: | EFFECT OF TIME OF SOWING OF RABI JOWAR ON THE MAGNITUDE OF SHOOTFLY DAMAGE, PERFORMANCE OF SOME RELEASED HYBRIDS AND DERIVATIVES OF EXOTIC X INDIAN CROSSES WAS EVALUATED AT BIJAPUR IN 1971-72 RABI, AND AT BELLARY DURING BOTH 1971-72 AND 1972-73 CROP SEASONS. JOWAR CROP SOWN ON DATES SYNCHRONIZING WITH CONVENTIONAL OCTOBER SOWINGS IN THE RESPECTIVE RABI TRACTS REGISTERED PHENOMENAL INCREASE IN THE INCIDENCE OF DEAD HEARTS TO THE EXTENT OF 155.8 % OVER EARLY (I.E SEPTEMBER) SOWN CROP ACROSS VARIETIES AND LOCATIONS . GENERALLY HIGH AND LOW LEVELS OF SHOOTFLY DAMAGE WERE ASSOCIATED WITH LOW AND HIGH GRAIN AND STRAW YIELDS, RESPECTIVELY. GRAIN AND STRAW YIELDS EXHIBITED AN INCREASE OF 70.4 AND 67.4% OVER DELAYED/ CONVENTIONAL SOWINGS. VARIETIES M-35-1 , RCR 408 AND R-147 WERE FOUND TO HAVE RELATIVELY HIGH DEGREE OF TOLERANCE TO SHOOTFLY. ON THE CONTRARY , THE HYBRIDS CSH-1 AND CSH-3 RECORDED MAXIMUM SHOTFLY DAMAGE. |
