| Abstract/Description: | THE PAPER SUGGESTS VARIOUS ALTERNATIVE AGRONOMIC MEASURES TO INCREASE THE YIELDS OF CROPS AND THERE BY THE NET GAINS. POTENTIAL OF SAFFLOWER AS A MAJOR COMMERCIAL CROP IN PLACE OF DRYLAND COTTON IN BELLARY REGION HAS BEEN DISCUSSED FOR ENHANCING OVERALL PRODUCTIVITY OF VERTISOLS. SHORT DURATION VARIETIES OF FIELD BEANS SHOWED TREMENDOUS POTENTIAL IN TH AREA AS A SUPPLEMENTARY GRAIN LEGUME BOTH IN NORMAL AND SUB NORMAL SEASONS. PRODUCTION LEVELS OF ALL RABI CROPS, IN GENERAL , AND WINTER SORGHUM IN PARTICULAR WERE OBSERVED TO INCREASE REMARKABLY BY SHIFTING SOWINGS FROM TRADITIONAL LATE OCTOBER TO IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE RECEIPT OF RAINS IN SEPTEMBER. SHORT DURATION VARIETIES /HYBRIDS OF SORGHUM (90-100DAYS) REVEALED SUPERIOR PERFORMANCE. |
