dc.description.abstract | Azolla is an ancient aquatic fern and its impact on environment was published in Encyclopedie Methodique Botanique by Lamarck in 1783. It is considered to be the most mysterious and magical fern. It is also behind the change of earth’s climatic condition way back 50 million years ago which is commonly known as “Azolla event”. The theory of climatic shift was explained by CO2 sequestered through Azolla which caused atmospheric CO2 level fall and changed the greenhouse climate to the favorable climate. This famous event occurred by forming Azolla bloom and lasted for 800,000 years. It has been featured and documented on the cover of “National geographic” in 2005, “Nature” in 2006, “Geoexpro” magazine in 2007 and “Geoscientist” in 2014. Besides this quality of sucking atmospheric CO2, it has economical importance in almost every field like agriculture as biofertilizer, livestock feed, waste water treatment, biofuel, bio-remediation and even for medical purposes. Hence, Azolla is considered as ‘Green Gold Mine’. | en_US |
