Abstract/Description: | This paper describes several methods of production of rooted planting materials in black pepper nurseries, which include traditional, rapid multiplication, trench, serpentine, plug-tray, and vertical column methods. Some of the fungal and viral diseases, as well as parasitic nematodes, infesting black pepper in nurseries are also described. For the integrated management of nursery and for the production of disease-free and healthy planting materials, some good agricultural practices are suggested. The establishment of model nurseries is also discussed. The establishment of such nurseries to ensure the availability of good quality and disease-free planting materials of desired high yielding varieties will have a tremendous impact on production, productivity and quality of black pepper. This successful intervention is strongly recommended to all agencies involved in black pepper nurseries in the country. The procedure is simple and highly suitable for the production of disease-free planting material of high yielding varieties and also farmers varieties to meet the increasing demand for planting materials. |
