Abstract/Description: | Augmentation, characterization and evaluation of genetic resources is a continuous process for the identification of traits to meet emerging challenges. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) gennplasrn collections are being maintained by the Germplasm management unit (GMU) at Directorate of Oilseeds Research (DOR), Hyderabad, India since 2001. This paper reports the results of some major characterization and evaluation efforts for fresh augmentations and accessions from past rejuvenations for new descriptors carried out by the GMU. The study material included 37 exotic accessions and 9 collections from Orissa, India and a set of 681 accessions from past rejuvenations evaluated under different agronomic situations. Variability existing for different traits has been quantified and promising accessions were identified. Future research priorities have been discussed. |
