CONSTRAINTS ENCOUNTERED BY WOMEN PANCHAYATMEMBERSOFPANCHAYATIRAI SYSTEM IN SIKAR DISCTRICT OF RAIASTHAN

Abstract

The participation of wotnen in the panchayati Raj is considered essential not only for ensuring political participation in the democratic process but also for rising fuaelopment goals for women. The Indian parliament had pnssed 73'd constitutional amendment in L993 to proaide for reseroation of 33 per cent of elected seats for uomen at different leoels of local goaetnance. At present more th.an 70 lakh'women haae been holding the ffices of the members and chairpersons at different tiers of the panchayats. Rnjasthnn is the pioneer state in the country where panchayati rai system was introduced on October 2, 1.959. At present there are 3058 women Sarpanch and 27000 ?tomen Pqnch in the Panchayati Raj Institutes of Rajasthan. So there is a great need to haoe deep understanding about Constrqints being faced by Women Panchayat Members in Panchayati Rnj lnstitutes. Therefore the present study entitled "Constraints Encountered by Women Panchayat Members of Panchayati Raj System in Sikar District of Rajasthan" was conducted in Siknr district of Rnjasthan. The results of the study shozued that the Main constraints encountered by women in panchayat were illiteracy, male dominated politics, Iack of knotaledge about panchayat functions,not economically independent, and lack of communication flmong gram panchayat members. lt was also found that majority of the women pnchayat members perceiaed personal and socinl constraints as most imp or t ant constr aint s.
