Abstract/Description: | Bt cotton was first introduced commercially in India during 2002. The commercial adoption of this technology has risen dramatically from a few thousand acres in 2002 to than 34.61 lakh acres in 2006. Even though the technology crowns the credits of various benefits it’s end users in India have certain concerns about it’s bio-safety, ethical, social, health, economic and environmental implications. These objections and concerns prophesize that there will be resistance against GE crops in general and Bt cotton in particular in near future. The mindset of the people, their awareness and knowledge level about the technology and the adopter’s technology use behaviour play a major role in sustaining the technology. Keeping this in mind, an empirical study was conducted to assess the cultivation behaviour of Bt cotton growers at farm level and the various constraints faced by them with regard to Bt cotton cultivation. The study reveals that the farmers had favourable attitude towards Bt cotton. They had very low level of knowledge about the correct Bt cotton genotypes suited for their region, spacing, seed rate, how to plant the refugee crop, ETL for various pests and need based spraying of chemical pesticides for pests other than bollworms. Majority of them were not adopting the refugee technology recommended by GEAC. Certain constraints viz., high seed cost, complexity in raising refugee crops, non-availability of Public Bt cotton varieties etc., were expressed by them. The study concludes that information provision on the technology, the cultivation aspects, its benefits and risks is need of the hour. |
