Farming of Indian white shrimp, Peanaeus indicus and winter farming of whiteleg shrimp, Paenaeus vannamei in South Gujarat

Abstract

Brackishwater aquaculture in India is sysnonymous with shrimp farming and a single species white leg shrimp, Penaeus vannamei dominates the Indian shrimp industry. Penaeus vannamei is a non-native species, with natural populations inhabiting the pacific coast of North America. This species is also the largest farmed species of shrimp around the world in terms of production and area under culture. However, off late the culutre of P. vannamei in India has been seriously affected by an array of issues like emerging diseases, poor growth, lower success rates, higher incidence of viral diseases and rising production costs results in production and profitability. Indian white shrimp, Penaeus indicus is an indigenous candidate shrimp species that can be economically grown iin brackishwater regions of country.
