dc.description.abstract | Coastal aquaculture comprises land based brackishwater aquaculture and open water mariculture. Mariculture is yet to take off on a commercial scale though there are initiatives at sea weed culture and molluscan culture in certain parts of the country. Brackishwater farming in land- based ponds are being undertaken in about 1,50,000 ha of area in coastal States and it is presently synonymous with shrimp farming and that too centered around the tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon. Economic Sustainability of Brackishwater Farming Disease Diagnostics: Outbreak of White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) disease was the major setback experienced by the shrimp farming sector since 1995. CIBA has conducted extensive studies on the occurrence and the diagnostics of WSSV. DNA based Nested PCR Kit was developed by it for the rapid diagnosis of White Spot Virus Disease in shrimps. It is being marketed through a commercial biotech firm. White muscle disease in scampi is also equally destructive. It is caused by the RNA based Noda virus. A diagnostic kit for the disease has been developed and released for identifying the pathogens. Immunodiagnostic technique for bacterial diseases in fish has been developed. For this purpose fish serum containing anti-rabbit IgG antibodies from tilapia and Mugil cephalus has been raised. These antibodies have been successfully used for diagnosis of bacterial diseases in fish. Based on the technique developed, a patent application has been filed with Indian Patenting Authority for granting patent for the disease diagnosis method. | en_US |
