dc.description.abstract | Both the wild and the cultivated finger millets are important from the point of germplasm collection, conservation and utilisation since they form the primary gene pool. Various breeding methods such as mass selection, pure‐line selection, recombination breeding and mutation breeding are widely approached for the genetic improvement in finger millet. Hybridisation and recombination breeding is difficult in finger millet since emasculation and cross pollination are tedious due to small florets and low success of emasculation techniques. Finger millet is highly nutritious, and thus calls for intensive evaluation of germplasm to assess its nutritional qualities. Alternatively male sterility is one of the useful techniques to overcome the hybridisation difficulties. Mutation breeding was effectively used in finger millet for the development of early‐maturing types, generation of polygenic variability and development of complete/partial male‐sterile lines. Physical, chemical and combinations of mutagens were used for this purpose | en_US |
