Complete Details of Technology: :
ICAR-NIHSAD, Bhopal has developed a Mobile Application (app) titled ?Bird Flu se Suraksha? for creating awareness about Bird flu among various stakeholders including poultry farmers. This mobile app provides know-how for Poultry farmers/bird owners, Veterinary professionals, Consumers of poultry and poultry products and Bird handlers (butchers, workers in poultry farm/zoos/live bird markets, transporters/traders) with illustrations where required to protect themselves and their farms. Poultry is one of the fastest growing segments of the agricultural sector in India. The poultry industry is contributing about Rs.70,000/- crores to the national GDP and providing employment to more than 4 million people either directly or indirectly. Bird flu also called Avian influenza is a major threat to poultry industry and is an important zoonotic disease which poses significant public health risk with pandemic potential. Outbreak of bird flu during early 2006 had resulted in losses to the tune of over ₹2200 crores to the Indian poultry industry. Thereafter continual outbreaks of bird flu in various states have caused extensive losses to the poultry industry. Awareness about the disease among various stakeholders will go a long way in the control of the disease in Indian poultry and also will prevent human infections. With the penetration of android based smart phones in every part of India, a bilingual (Hindi and English) mobile app would be the fastest way for dissemination of requisite information on bird flu to a large number of stakeholders. The bilingual Bird Flu se Suraksha mobile app for Bird flu in Hindi and English has been conceived as easy to use, user friendly reference guide for various stakeholders. It contains the following know-how for various stakeholders in the form of questions and answers with illustrations where required. 1. Poultry farmers - The disease, when to suspect, how to know, biosafety and farm biosecurity 2. Veterinary professionals - Disease, its diagnosis, reporting, collecting, packaging and sending the samples to the reference laboratories, biosafety and biosecurity measures 3. Consumers - Safe handling, slaughtering, dressing and cooking of meat 4. Bird handlers - Safe handling, transportation and disposal of carcass Keeping in mind the internet connectivity issues faced in villages and remote areas, it was decided that the app should be in off-line mode and will require connectivity only for installation, giving feedback and further referencing. With its size of 8.83 Mb, this app can be installed in any android smart phone without slowing down the device. The mobile app is intended to be distributed through Google Play Store free of cost as it in public interest.
