Complete Details of Technology: | :
Successful investigations on encapsulation of microbial strains have largely been confined to the laboratory and presently no commercial products are available in the market. However, the ICAR-Indian Institute of Spices Research, Kozhikode has successfully developed, field-tested and commercialized encapsulation technology (biocapsules) for smart delivery of agriculturally important microorganisms. The technology involves encapsulation of the microorganisms of interest in a gelatin capsule for delivery to agricultural crops for enhanced soil nutrient solubilization, enhanced growth and yield
Brief Description of Technology Including Salient Features:
: The main components of the technology are the microbial strain, protecting agent, buffering agent, essential nutrients and a bulking agent packed in a hard gelatine capsule. The formulation involves culturing of PGPR, pelleting the cells at appropriate growth phase, treating with buffering agent, followed by mixing with protecting agent, inert bulking agent and nutrients. The mixture with a PGPR population of 1010 CFU/g is then packed in the capsule. The whole process is done at a temperature range between 20-30˚C. The total weight of the biocapsule is just 1g. The process of making the formulation is simple and does not require any sophisticated equipment and conditions except basic facilities. The capsule formulation contains PGPR in an immobilized/inactive condition and the cells can be activated by dissolving the capsule in water. This suspension can be diluted and the seeds or seedlings or rhizomes are soaked in the suspension for 30 minutes before sowing/ transplanting into the main field. The remaining suspension can be used as soil drench.
Benefits/Utility | : | ||
Smart and precise microbial delivery to crops, maintains high microbial population, green technology, low production cost, easy to handle and store, high shelf life, production and storage at normal temperature, does not require sophisticated equipment for manufacture, can be used to deliver all agriculturally important microorganisms
Precaution With The Technology | : | Do not mix with agro-chemicals during field application, cannot be stored once the biocapsule is suspended in water; has to be used on the same day.
Time Of Application Use | : | During planting and during critical stages of the crop
How To Use | : | ||
The biocapsule is suspended in water, mixed thoroughly and the seeds/ planting material is suspended in this mixture for 30 minutes before sowing. The mixture can also be applied by drenching in the main filed during critical stages of the crop.
Impact, If Adopted | : | ||
Since it employs beneficial microorganisms, it can partially replace chemical use in crop production, enhances crop tolerance to diseases, promotes crop growth and yield. This encapsulation technology can also replace the existing powder, granular and liquid biofertilizer formulations in the long run.
Social Impact | : | ||
It is a benign technology, which employs beneficial microorganisms and can be integrated in any nutrient management regimes for any crop, irrespective of the agro-ecological zones. Enhances soil quality, crop growth and yield. Simultaneously, reduces chemical use and therefore reduces environment pollution.
Technology Spread | : | ||
It has spread over 5.0% of the cropped area in India, and is expected to increase by 20% in the next 5 years.
TargetUsers/Stake holders | : | Biofertilizer manufacturers, planters, farmers etc Repositories involved in storage of microbial strains.
