Complete Details of Technology: | :
Cardamom is ‘Queen of Spices’. Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton) is one of the oldest known spices in the world. Evergreen forests of Western Ghats of South India are considered as the centre of origin as well as natural habitat of cardamom. Cardamom is commercially cultivated for its dried fruits (capsules), which is also referred as cardamom of commerce. In cardamom katte disease is the most devastating viral disease which has resulted in decrease in cardamom cultivation area in Karnataka. Only the option to overcome this is cultivation of resistant varieties. In this regard to develop variety with katte resistance hybridization work was carried out which lead to the development of high yielding katte resistant hybrid Appangala 2. This hybrid is evolved from hybridization between Appangala-1 (Moderate yielder) × NKE -19 (Mosaic resistant).
Brief Description of Technology Including Salient Features:
It is a first hybrid in cardamom with resistance to mosaic under field conditions and moderately resistant under artificial conditions. High yielding cardamom hybrid with average yield of 927.29 kg dry capsules/ha. Capsules are green and medium bold. Essential oil content of capsules is 6.3 % and it has high α terpinyl acetate (40.32 %).
