Complete Details of Technology: | :
Small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton) popularly known as Queen of Spices is an important spice crop grown in India. Quality of cardamom depends on its physical appearance. The green, round, bold capsules fetches higher price in the market. Water stress is one of the major threats in cardamom cultivation. Cardamom is generally grown as a rainfed crop and soil moisture is one of the limiting factors in augmenting the productivity. Though cardamom crop is grown in Western Ghats that receive an annual rainfall of 2500-4000 mm, the rainfall is not evenly distributed. The crop experiences moisture stress during December - May. Cardamom germplasm accession IC 584058, is a compact flowering genotype with 80 % of the capsules > 7 mm size. It has also relative tolerance to moisture stress. This genotype is developed by clonal selection from the germplasm collections.
Brief Description of Technology Including Salient Features:
IC 584058 is a cardamom genotype with plant height of 265-290 cm, number of yielding tillers 14-16, number of panicles per plant 21-26, panicle length of 53-60 cm and having 98-144 capsules per panicle. This has been tested under AICRP on Spices Co-ordinated trial (CAR/CI/3.7) from 2019 to 2022. In the multilocation trial this genotype recorded yield of 482.32 kg/ha under irrigated condition and 308.55 kg/ha under moisture stress conditions.
