IISR-Chandra is an early maturing hybrid variety with high fruit setting and long spikes. The ability to give consistent yield in successive years is a significant feature of this variety. This new variety can be easily identified by its thick, ovate-elliptic leaves. The average spike length is 17.5 cm, longer than some of the commonly cultivated pepper landraces and varieties. The spikes bear bold berries and compact setting is noticed. The average number of berries is 90 and the average weight of 1000 berries is 156 grams. Chandra has a piperine content of 5.1%, which imparts the characteristic spicy flavorof black pepper. Other traits include a dry recovery of 33.5%, oleoresin content of 8.7% and an essential oil content of 3.2%. During the early stages of varietal evaluation itself, IISR-Chandra has shown immense potential and promise. The variety has outperformed existing varieties registering a yield advantage of about 15 per cent. At the IISR experimental farm, Peruvannamuzhi,an average yield of 7.5 kg of fresh pepper berries (2.5 kg dry pepper) was obtained from six year old vines. The maximum yield obtained from a single vine of same age was 21.5 kg fresh pepper (7.1 kg dry pepper) and this vine measured between 12 and 15 feet in height. The ground work for the development of Chandra started way back in 1995-96 by selecting the parental varieties Cholamundi and Thommankodi for developing a hybrid. Both these varieties have several desirable features and the attempt was to synthesize a new variety By 2001-2002, a new hybrid, HP-1117, was obtained by crossing Cholamundi and Thommankodi. Cholamundi was used as the female parent in the development of HP-1117. This initial hybrid, HP-1117 was back crossed with Thommankodi. In this cross, Thommankodi was used as the male parent and HP-1117 was the female parent. IISR-Chandra (HP 2173) is the hybrid obtained from this breeding approach. This back cross resulted in the hybrid, IISR Chandra to have more resemblance to Thommankodi. This unique process significantly impacted the development timeline of the variety. Researchers at ICAR-IISR have also completed the Whole Genome Sequencing of IISR-Chandra enabling proper identification and authentication of the variety. | |||
