In the policy brief titled "Nurturing India’s asafoetida economy: status, prospects and the path forward" , we studied the asafoetida crop economy and developed a comprehensive policy document for the improvement of the sector. Asafoetida, commonly known as ‘Hing’ is a pungent spice with deep roots in Indian cuisine and traditional medicine. India heavily relies on imports to satisfy its demand for the commodity. The domestic asafoetida sector faces numerous challenges, hindering its growth and sustainability. In this policy brief, we explore the various dimensions of the asafoetida industry in India including its availability, production, processing, consumption and trade. Drawing on field survey in Hathras district, focus group discussion and secondary data we highlight the issues shaping the trajectory of this sector and provide a precise roadmap for the asafoetida economy in India. Brief Description of Technology Including Salient Features:
India is the worlds largest importer, consumer and exporter of asafoetida. Raw asafoetida is the oleo-gum-resin extracted from the rhizome and roots of various species of Ferula, primarily Ferula assa-foetida. It is a perennial herb belonging to Apiaceae family (Umbelliferae)and is a well-known condiment. As the largest contributor to the spice imports, this commodity warrants a close study to explore possibilities for enhancing domestic production and efficiency of the processing sector.
Benefits/Utility :
The policy brief can guide the policy makers on the directions and initiatives to be undertaken for the improvement of asafoetida crop economy in the country. This would include both the primary production efforts, which are in its nascent phase and the processing sector, which requires policy support and modernization.
Precaution With The Technology : Nil
Time Of Application Use : NA
How To Use :
Policy document indicating desirable interventions in the asafoetida crop economy
Impact, If Adopted :
The asafoetida crop economy will benefit from the suggested policy and technology interventions suggested in the policy brief. The import dependency on asafoetida can be reduced promoting self sufficiency in spices. The processing sector modernization offers scope for employment generation and value addition.
Social Impact :
Presently, the asafoetida processing sector provides employment to several lakh people. The primary production of the crop and its primary processing is very limited in extent. But the strengthening of this sector through policy interventions and support will improve the economic condition of the people dependent on the processing sector for livelihood. The increased area under cultivation of the crop along with the new avenues in processing of the primary product will increase the agricultural employment in areas with potential for growing asafoetida.
