dc.description | Organic farming is very much native to India. The concept of organic farming is based on intimate understanding of nature's ways. The system does not believe in mining the soil of its nutrients and does not degrade it in any way for today's needs. Organic agriculture holds great promise commercially, socially and environmentally. This is now being commercially practiced in 160 countries. Globally 35 million hectares of agricultural land are managed organically by almost 1.4 million producers. By March 2010 India has brought more than 4.48 million ha area under organic certification process. Out of this cultivated area accounts for 1.08 million ha while remaining 3.4 million ha is wild forest harvest collection area. Organic agricultural systems have an inherent potential to both reduce GHG emissions and to enhance carbon sequestration in the soil. In The North Eastern Hill Region, organic is a way of life and farmers are doing it as a tradition, may be under compulsion in the absence of resources needed for conventional high input intensive agriculture. In this there is scope for bringing more area under organic farming. For majority of the small holder farmers, organic farming means growing crops with out using synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. This is the gist of organic farming. To be able to grow a healthy crop organically involves keeping the soil healthy, proper nutrient management and plant protection and how the crop is to be certified as organic. An awareness is required to be created on all these aspects amongst the farming community. The book “Principles and Concepts of Organic Farming” deals with all the above aspects like importance, principles, selection of site and maintenance of buffer zone, conversion from conventional to organic farming, seed & planting material, nutrient management, water management, plant protection, plant growth promoter, post harvest management, processing, packaging and labeling, system integration, certification and marketing etc. This book is an useful resource for all the stakeholders practicing organic farming. | en_US |
