dc.description.abstract | An evaporative cooled storage structure (ECSS) was evaluated for storage of vegetables to increase shelf life. Solar photovoltaic (SPV) power system consisting of 4 solar panels of 100Wp each, one solar inverter and a battery bank (including 2 batteries) were used to power the cooling system of the ECSS. The results showed that SPV system is suitable to supply electricity to cover the load requirement without utilizing power from the electrical grid during the sunny day. The average air cooling efficiency was found highest for CELdek pad at 78.67%, compared to 73.82% for wood wool and 70.75% for khas pad material when these materials were used in all four sides in the ECSS. It shows that when the vegetables were stored in ECSS compared to room storage, physiological loss in weight (PLW) was less due to low temperature and high relative humidity thus keeping the freshness of vegetables for a longer period of time. The difference in initial and final firmness of produce was found highest in case of room storage in each of the vegetables while the low difference was found in ECSS. | en_US |
