dc.description.abstract | Computerized database was prepared to show the distribution of salt-affected soils in seven states, one union territory and forty-six districts pertaining to the coastal region of India. The salt-affected soils maps were georeferenced and digitized to prepare a composite map of salt-affected soils for coastal region in India, using ILWIS GIS. The boundaries of state, district, physiography and agro-climatic regions were superimposed with salt affected soils database primarily for macro-and micro-level planning in reclamation and management. Total area of salt affected soils is 2501369 ha in which 1828361 ha and 673008 ha were saline and sodic, respectively. Soils were distributed in seven physiographic zones viz, coastal (38.8%), peninsular (13.9%), mud flats/ mangrove swamps (13.4%), deltaic (9.6%), aeofluvial/aeolian/arid (6.5%), alluvial (3.5%) and others (14%). The state-wise distribution showed largest area in Gujarat (50%), followed by West Bengal (17.6%), Tamil Nadu (12.7%), Andhra Pradesh (7.6%), Orissa (5.8%), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (3.0%), Maharashtra (2.0%) and Kerala (0.8%). Largest areas is distributed in Gujarat Plains and Hills Region (50%) followed by East Coast Plains and Hills Region (25%), Lower Gangetic Plain Region (17.6%), West Coast Plains and Ghat Region (4.3%) and Island Region (0.3%) respectively | en_US |
