dc.description.abstract | A field experiment was conducted during 2013-14 and 2014-15 at Belvatagi, Karnataka to identify cropping systems which are sustainable and water use efficient under varied water release situations. Four water release situations (July middle, July end, August middle and August end) with six cropping systems [Maize Full season hybrid - chickpea, Maize PEEHM 5 (Pusa Extra Early Hybrid Maize) – chickpea, Maize PEEHM 5– safflower, Sunflower – chickpea, Bt cotton and Maize PEEHM 5– durum wheat] were tested in split plot design for two years. Sowings done with the early release of canal water in July middle resulted in higher maize equivalent yield (94.81, 82.42 and 88.61 q/ha respectively) and decreased with delay in water release. Water use efficiency (11.55 kg/ ha mm), gross returns (Rs. 1,16,080/ha), net returns (Rs. 68,580/ha) and BC ratio (2.48) were also better in July middle release. Full season maize hybrid – chickpea cropping system gave the higher maize equivalent yield in both the years and also on pooled basis over other cropping systems. The same system was also efficient in terms of water use efficiency and economics. | en_US |
