dc.description.abstract | This paper looks at the regional variation in agricultural wages received by men and women in India and tries to explain a seemingly contradictory observation that the gender differential in wages is greatest in the Southern states of India, where women enjoy a better status in society as compared to the Northern states. To understand the factors which lead to a higher gender differential in wages we estimate district level aggregate demand equations for total male and female labor. In particular the paper asks whether variation in female and male labor supply has any role in the observed regional pattern of wage differentials. Suitable instruments for labor supply of men and women are used to identify the structural demand equations. | en_US |
