Abstract/Description: | _ - A field experiment was conducted at Research farm of CSWCRTI, Research centre, Sunabeda in Koraput Disfrict of Odisha &nng2 A7 - 2010 n Kharif season on sandy clayey red lateritic soil with an objecfive to assess the effeci of different multitier cropping systems o.t .,r.,oit, soil - nutrient loss and economic productivity. The experiment comprisiag of square plantation of two types of fruit trees, papaya and drumstickwithhedgerowplantadonof Gliriciiin onboundary, was lald on2percentsioping land. Ginger was taken as test intercrop. The total lreatment combinations were six, includilrg the farmers; practice of ragi cultivation as control. Square plantation of papaya and drumstick in ginger flots arrested runoff by 6.05 and 5.24% 1n comparison to ragi broadiuitit - tg. In comparison to control, Gliricidia plantafion along the boundary of papaya and drumsfick planteJpiots reduced soi,l loss by 8 .64 and1.Bg thai respectively. Organic carUon (OC), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) loss was reduced by 47.60, 54.79 and 45 - 54% respectively in papaya+ Gliricidia ar.d M.84,i9.58 and 44.05% in drumstick + iliriridio multitier - crop_ping system. - IVIaximurn.Oq buiiq up was 0.59 % in Papaya + Gliricidia foliowed by Drumstick + Gliricidia (0.55 %). Available P and K *ere also improved i:r ihe soil respectively by 19.i and 18 - 5% over sole Papaya and 22.2 xd 20.4% over sole drumstick freatments. Gliricidia heds"row plantafion improved ginger yield by 11,.5'k under papaya + Gliricidia combination and 8.6% irnder drumstick + Gliricidia, system in comparison to papayi and drumstick sole treatments. Maximum net returns ('3.57 lacs ha - 1) were obtained in papaya+ iliriridia system of ginger cuttivation, which also Savehighestbenefit cost ratio of - 2.05 followed by drumstick+ Gliricidia .90;. Farmers, practice of broadcasting of ragi was not found economical as ii gave B: C ratio less than 1 with significant higher nltrie - 1t _erfility, soil and water iosses.
