Abstract/Description: | The damage effects and reproductive potential of the root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne arenaria and M. incognita and their ability in the modulation of reactive oxygen species (super oxide radicals, hydrogen peroxide and lipid peroxidation) and membrane stability index in the leaves of groundnut were studied. The infection of root-knot nematode, M. areneria at high level (1000 J2/100 cm3 of soil) resulted in significantly higher number of gall and egg-mass compared to treatment with M. incognita at both low (100 J2/100 cm3 of soil) and high (1000 J2/100 cm3 of soil) level and un-inoculated control. Significant difference in plant growth characters was also observed due to root-knot nematode, M. incognita and M. areneria infection. Observation on reactive oxygen species revealed that significantly higher level of superoxide redical and H2O2 content in the leaves of groundnut in the treatment with high (1000 J2/100 cm3 of soil) level of M. incognita compared to treatment with M. areneria at high (1000 J2/100 cm3 of soil) level after 80DAS. There is also a significantly less invasion of M. incognita in the roots of groundnut compared to M. areneria at the time of first attack. Increased level of reactive oxygen species in response M. incognita infection in groundnut may contributed to the resistance/or incompatible reaction in groundnut and differences in genetic makeup of the two species of nematodes may be responsible for differential behavior in groundnut. |
