Abstract/Description: The objective of this chapter is to review the evolution of social sciences in India with a focus on Indian Agriculture. In a sense, it attempts to evaluate the contribution of social sciences to agricultural development in the country. Though the time frame for the review is 100 years, it also presents the situational analysis of social sciences for agriculture and hence is akin to status paper. The paper shows how social science knowledge is produced, documented, disseminated, and used. It also shows how social science disciplines are coping and evolving in the face of diverging trends. Social sciences are now taught everywhere and the results are widely disseminated by new information technologies.
