Abstract/Description: Although women represent bulk of labour force especially in the developing countries however, they are not yet brought under the fold of mainstream of development. But now growing cognizance has prevailed among nations that, if the operation of social and economic change had being guaranteed, it is the woman who has to be more mobilized and may lead the nation towards progress and prosperity. While developing countries have been deeply interested in the development of small enterprises during the past two decades, issues and question relating to the promotion of women entrepreneurs engaged in micro and small enterprises are being raised much more recently. In order to accelerate formation of indigenous woman enterprises imaginative development program and policies backed by sound institutional support is therefore, needed. If entrepreneurship is made socially rewarding for women and encouraged proper motivation and training as a common human activity, it will definitely induce a steady flow of women independent entrepreneurs. They face many cultural barriers that need to be taken into account in designing policies, program and specific services. The gender sensitive approach i.e. Gender and Development (GAD) works to improve women's position relative to men in ways which will benefit and transform society as a whole. Entrepreneurship needs different characteristics and factors for successful achievement of target and programme and policies designed keeping in mind the profile of women entrepreneurs. Hence it was conceptualized that this study of all these factors together would help in defining certain characteristics of business which could be improved in today’s self employed women and may be transmitted to potential entrepreneurs through training and teaching. The present study was carried out in Gadarpur block of Tarai region of Udham Singh Nagar district. The main reason of the selection of this block were that the migrated Bengali families were settled in this block and engaged in self employment purposive. Purposive random sampling was done to select all those respondents who are engaged in self employment and earning some amount. It was concluded that out off for selected Core i.e. individual, economic, work and social core, economic core ranked as main motive. Almost all the respondents reported that they wanted to supplement family income and what save for education and the children. The motivational sources were categorized into three main groups viz. localite, cosmopolite and self motivated. Self motivation was found to be that dominating source of majority of the respondents.
