dc.description.abstract | In semi-arid region of India, availability of soil moisture is crucial for agricultural production under rainfed condition. Moreover, the availability of soil moisture depends on the soil water retention-release behaviour of the soils, which is influenced by the soil physical-chemical properties. The clay with its very large adsorption surface and cation exchange capacity (CEC), which reflects the negative charge of clays, greatly affect the water retention characteristics. In the present study, an attempt has been made to relate the water retention characteristics with clay content, CEC and some other soil properties using step-wise regression technique in SPSS. Soil physical and chemical properties of 14 benchmark soil series representing semi-arid tropics of India, were collected. Regression models were developed for water retention at 33, 100, 300, 5000, 800, 1000 and 1500 kPa. The contribution of each predictor was estimated from standardized coefficients (Beta coefficients) and standard deviations. CEC contributes more than 50% in predicting the water retention at various suctions followed by clay content (25-30%) and exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) (9-15%). Thus, CEC and clay content are the important soil properties influencing the water retention characteristics in the soils of semi-arid tropics of India. | en_US |
