dc.description.abstract | An experiment was conducted with three rice cultivars varying in the degree of submergence tolerance viz. FR13A (tolerant), CR 626-26-1 (moderately tolerant) and IR 42 (susceptible) to identify the factors that help the plants to survive under complete submergence. Plant height, dry matter content, oxidizing activity of roots and carbohydrate accumulation by the plants were determined under complete submergence. The increase of seedling height was found to be more in elongating type, moderately tolerant cultivar CR 626-26-1 followed by the tolerant FR13A and the susceptible cultivarIR42 when the 21-days old seedlings were submerged. Dry weight of all cultivars decreased under submergence compared to their control counterparts. Though the oxidizing activity of roots, starch and total sugar content decreased in all genotypes under submergence, the tolerant cultivar FR13A had the highest root oxidase activity, starch and total sugar content compared to the other two cultivars. Each of these factors is expected to have contributed to the ability of the plants to survive the stress. | en_US |
