dc.description.abstract | In India several programs were launched by the government as well as NGOs to up lift the tribal people. All such programs one way or other helped the tribal farmers for their survival. The health, education, economy, habitat and so on are the most important areas which need to be focused to provide livelihood security for tribal areas. Identification and assessment of these areas will help policy makers and extension functionaries to move in a right direction towards welfare of the tribal farmers. The purpose of the study was to develop a strategy for improving the livelihood security of tribal farmers in high altitude tribal zone of Karnataka state. ChamarajaNagara district was purposively selected for the study since it is having highest number of tribal farmers in Karnataka State. Total eight villages were selected for the study from four ranges. From each village, 15 respondents were selected by following simple random sampling procedure thus making a total of 120 respondents. Keeping in view of the analysis of personal, socio-economic and psychological characteristics of the tribal farmers, their extent of livelihood security, the relationship between profile characteristics and livelihood security, existing livelihood systems and the problems and suggestions as perceived by the tribal farmers, an effective strategy was derived out of the present investigation to improve the livelihood security of thehigh altitude tribal zone of Karnataka state. The strategy was designed with a 5 step progressive approach considering 6 core areas. The six core areas on which strategy was built are as follows Education and Training, Health and Habitat, Group dynamics and Cultural heritage,Support and Services,Communication and Networking and Research and Development. Each core area starts with preliminary and basic requirements of tribal farmers as the first step advancing towards continuous progressive development of tribal farmers towards strengthening their livelihood security. Involvement of different stake holders and their integration was also depicted in the model. | en_US |
