Management of Potential Fishery Resources

Abstract

The marine fishing industry of India, though capable of becoming an important sector in the national output, has been growing at a slow rate, at an annual average rate of 3.4% during the period 1970-1979. The marine fish landings of India, which averages about 0.62 tonnes per sq. km and which is mostly from the inshore waters up to about 50 m depth, is low, as compared to the estimated total marine fisheries potential of about 4.5 million tonnes in the entire economic zone. The present relatively low production is mainly due to the marine fisheries being not fully exploited in the inshore waters up to about 50 m depth and practically unexploited in the economic zone beyond 50 m depth.
