Abstract/Description: | Soil carbon sequestration refers to the removal of CO2 from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and storage as long lived stable forms of organic matter that is not rapidly decomposed. Soil carbon sequestration has several co-benefits, besides reduction in CO2 in the atmosphere and increase in organic matter in the soil. Management practices can enhance the sequestration of C in soil include additions of organic materials such as composts, biosolids and animal manures, reduced tillage, cover cropping, crop rotation, Biological N fixation by legumes, high root biomass crops and varieties, avoiding fallow, application of recommended nutrients and application of biochar to soil. |
