dc.description.abstract | Moisture stress is a widespread problem seriously influencing sesame production, especially in arid regions. The present study was carried out in order to evaluate the response of sesame cultivars to moisture stress and determine the best measures to increase and improve the yield of cultivars in stress condition. Seventeen released cultivars of sesame were tested in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications for two years (2009- 2010 and 20l0-201 1) at Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Regional Research Station, Kukma, Bhuj in Kachchh district of Gujarat. Thirteen drought tolerance indices including stress susceptibility index (SSI), relative drought index (RDI), stress tolerance index (STI), geometric mean productivity (GMP), tolerance (TOL), mean production (MP), yield index (YI), drought resistance index (DSI), yield stability index (YSI), stress susceptibility percentage (SSPI), modified stress tolerance index (KISTI), abiotic tolerance index (ATI) and % Reduction were applied on the basis of seed yield in irrigated and non-irrigated conditions. Among drought tolerance indices, MR GMR STI, YI, SSPI, Kl S-TI and K2STI can be used as the most suitable indicators for screening drought tolerant cultivars because they had positively higher correlation with Yp and Ys, where Ys is the yield of cultivar under stress, Yp the yield of cultivar under irrigated condition. In consideration to all.indices, cultivars PT-64, MURG 1, PB TIL 1, and 'GT3' exhibited the best mean rank and low standard deviation of rank, hence they were identified as the most drought tolerant cultivars, while cultivars 'C 1013', RT 125 and TMV 3 as the most sensitive. | en_US |
