Description |
Species of Pleurotus are able to degrade unfermented natural lignin-cellulosic wastes. From spawning until cropping, qualitative and quantitative changes occur in the substrate, namely, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin are degraded, solubility of the substrate is increased, phenol content is decreased, and sugar and amino acid contents are increased. Enzymic aspects affecting the chemical changes in the lignin-cellulosic substrate are considered. The potential commercial applications and implications for the spent substrate, such as single cell protein, are evaluated. [See FSTA (1989) 21 6J110 for part II.]
