Description |
Sex polymorphisms in plant populations continue to pose unsolved problems to the plant reproductive biologists. In gynodioecious populations, containing unisexual plants bearing female flowers and hermaphrodite plants with perfect flowers, the female plants have a gametic disadvantage compared to their hermaphrodite counterparts through lack of pollen production. While hermaphrodites contribute genes to the next generation through both pollen and ovules, the females contribute only via ovules (Lewis, 1941). Also the additional factor such as enforced outbreeding in females may contribute to the generation of variability in the populations.
