Description |
Apple (Malus X Domestica Borkh.) is one of the most important fruit crops of the world. On the globe, it is cultivated on an area of 52,48,126 hectares with the production of 6,34,88,907 metric tonnes (FAO, 2006). In India, it is cultivated in an area of 2,50,000 hectares with the annual production of 14,70,000 metric tonnes (FAa, 2006). Its cultivation is largely confined to the states of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttranchal and Arunachal Pradesh. In Himachal Pradesh, it is the leading fruit crop cultivated in 84,112 hectares with the production of 4,59,492 metric tonnes (Anonymous, 2004), and productivity of 5.46 mt/ha. The productivity of apple in the state is very low in comparison to the developed countries, which may be ascribed to various factors viz., genetic, environmental, nutritional, soil, topography of land, insect pest and disease etc.
