Description The Himalayas represent a diverse assemblage of ecological areas which are associated with a variety of forest types (Champion and Seth, 1960). A prominent ecological entity in these forest types is the natural grasslands. These may be short or vast stretches of flat or undulated lands covered with various botanical mixtures, grasses being the dominant ones. While the alpine pastures are very old in age, other grassy patches seem to be of recent origin having come into being due to biotic interferences, mostly the human (Singh and Sexena, 1978), Since long the vast cattle population presently around 237 million (Bhattacharya, 1976) in these Himalayas have sustained on these grasslands and have been supplying the much needed animal protein and other livestock products to the human population. The area and the botanical composition have not changed much during all this time but the grazing pressure has been increasing every year.with the increase in cattle population. Consequently, these grasslands have been depleted and damaged to such an extent that if allowed to remain in present state, even the sustainance of the existing cattle population may not be possible. This fact has already started showing its signs by way of weak and unproductive cattle in most of the Himalayan regions.
